VICE News Shared A Story Of A Heroin Addict Who Was Saved By Kratom

Although kratom is still unknown to many Americans, its use as an opium substitute to aid addicts through withdrawals has been documented for years in Asia. In fact, as far back as 1836, kratom was being used as an opium substitute.

The Differences Between Red And Green Kratom

If you’re new to the world of kratom, you probably have noticed that it’s usually marketed as either “red” or “green.” That’s because despite the fact that all kratom is Mitragyna speciosa, there are different strains named for the color of the central vein on the leaf. And while the difference in color is certainly stark, the distinctions don’t end there.

Red Kratom

The more prevalent kratom strains are derived from red-veined leaves. Red kratom, such as Red Maeng Da Kratom, is sought after both for its pain relief and sedative properties.

The pain relief of effects make red kratom popular with both those looking for an alternative to pharmaceutical pain killers and those searching for relief from opium withdrawals.

In addition, red kratom users often report feeling more relaxed and calm. These properties have made red kratom also popular as a sleep aid.

Green Kratom

Derived from green-veined kratom leaves, green kratom strains such as Green Maeng Da are valued as euphoric energy boosters.

More mild than red kratom, green strains can often be effective pain reducers without the sedative and lethargic effects of red strains. But they are most popular as energetic mood enhancers.

Helpful Tips For Dealing With Kratom Side Effects

When taken properly with respect to dosage and interactions with other substances, most users will never experience negative side effects from kratom. That being said, some who are new to kratom or who use a strain they are not familiar may experience some decidedly unwanted side effects including:

  • Dry mouth
  • Light dizziness
  • Upset stomach
  • Headache
  • A “hungover” feeling
  • Sleeping difficulty
  • Trouble focusing on work
  • Blurry Vision
  • Difficulty staying alert

Most of the time, these side effects are mild and will only last for a short time, quickly disappearing on their own. Even so, there are some common tips that will minimize these effects even further while restoring the balance to your system:

  • Take a break: Stop using kratom for several days or even a week.
  • Avoid depressants or stimulants: Other substances with depressant or stimulant qualities can intensify the side effects from kratom. While abstaining from kratom, abstain from these substances, too.
  • Hydrate: Water and lemon is an old remedy for a good reason. Drink two or three liters to flush your system.
  • Rest: The unwanted side effects of kratom don’t last long and after a good night’s sleep, you should feel normal again.

As with any supplement, it’s necessary to know your dosage and when taken properly, kratom will present minimal side effects. But when these uncomfortable effects present themselves, the aforementioned tips will have you feeling normal in no time.

Enhance Your Kratom Experience With These Potentiators

As beneficial as kratom is on its own, its effects can be increased with the use of potentiators — foods or herbs which can intensify the calming or energizing properties depending on the strain. And in addition to enhancing the effects of kratom — which can result in utilizing a smaller dosage — potentiators also offer the benefit of a more palatable kratom experience by introducing flavors that cut into the natural bitterness of Mitragyna Speciosa.


Many kratom users enjoy the flavor of grapefruit juice to cut the bitter flavor of kratom and although it’s useful in that respect, grapefruit is also an inhibitor that can result in higher amounts of kratom’s active ingredients in the bloodstream. But for grapefruit to work as an inhibitor, it should be ingested an hour or two before the kratom dosage is inhibited. And in that respect, the grapefruit peel is even more beneficial.


Starfruit, or carambola, is beneficial in the same way as grapefruit — as both a flavor enhancer and enzyme inhibitor. The difference is that starfruit is reported to work even better for both but it’s usually more expensive and harder to find.


Turmeric, the hip herbal cure-all, slows down the enzyme that breaks down kratom alkaloids. Although this doesn’t increase the effects, it does keep kratom in your system longer. One thing to keep in mind is that just like any effects you hope to obtain from turmeric, it’s important to ingest black pepper, which vastly increases the effects of curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric.

Cayenne Pepper

Although nothing in cayenne pepper will directly result in greater absorption of kratom alkaloids, cayenne and similar foods increase the pH levels in the stomach which will increase absorption. Of course, cayenne pepper can be powerful stuff and just a pinch or two is recommended as an addition to a dosage of kratom powder.


Magnesium is an NMDA antagonist, which means it can reduce kratom tolerance when taken regularly. So when taken with magnesium supplements on a regular basis, less and less kratom is necessary. However, it’s important to note that magnesium can have a laxative effect, so dosages should be closely monitored.

Kratom Basics

Kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa) is a tropical evergreen tree in the coffee family native to Southeast Asia where it has been used in traditional medicine for at least the past 250 years. The leaves of the tree are dried out, often times then ground up and made into a powder.  This old world medicine has made its way to the US and has been gaining in popularity for the past several years.  Many people enjoy effects ranging from stimulant and euphoria to sedation and pain killing properties.

The dried leaves or powder are typically ingested as a hot tea or using a method commonly known as “toss & wash”.  Dosage ranges from one person to the next but are typically in the range of 2 grams up to 10 grams however some people require more and others enjoy the effects on less. Weight, tolerance and other physiological factors can all play a part in the dosage that works best for each individual.  Fortunately, there are no known cases of physical danger from too high a dose besides nausea.

When the Kratom leaves are harvested to be dried, they are separated by the color of the vein on the leaf which can be either White, Green, or Red.

White and Green vein strains are know for their stimulant properties with Whites being considered slightly more energizing.  Green vein provides improved focus and stamina.  Whites and Greens have also been reported to help with anxiety and depression symptoms for some.

Red vein strains are more calming with sedative and analgesic properties.  Red vein strains are often used for pain relief and have even become popular with people seeking an all-natural remedy to help with opiate detoxing.  Feelings of euphoria and relaxation are quite common with Reds.

Quick and Easy Kratom Tea

While toss & wash is my usual go-to method, sometimes I enjoy brewing some kratom tea. Kratom tea can provide you with stress relief after a tough day at work…or you can enjoy it first thing in the morning to get a jump start on your day.  Green and white vein strains are most commonly sought after for their energizing properties while red vein strains are known for their analgesic and sedative properties.

This is a simple recipe and it produces a tea that is easy to drink and quite effective.

  1. Start with some powdered leaf and measure out your normal dosage.
  2. Bring 3-4 cups of water to a boil in a kettle.
  3. Add the kratom and some lemon juice into a small pot. I usually do about 2-3 teaspoons of lemon juice but you can add as much or as little as you want.
  4. Add the boiling water to the pot with the kratom and lemon juice and stir to get it well mixed.
  5. Get a rolling boil going and then turn heat down to medium or medium-high for about 15 minutes.
  6. Strain the tea into a cup with a reusable coffee strainer like this one that I got on Amazon.
  7. Finally, take the tea and run it through the strainer, over the kratom, a second time to get as much as possible.
  8. Some like to add a little honey or other sweetener…I like it just fine with the lemon juice
